Heaven Rain Flows Sweetly

Hi there. This is Shasha. I’m so glad you’re here.

Welcome to Heaven Rain Flows Sweetly, a documentary about my journey of reconnecting with nature and my native roots in Himalayan China.

The story goes…

Shasha, a nomad who has moved frequently, arrives in Cascadian Oregon. Somehow, the smell of rain here reminds her of the Himalayan foothills she originally comes from. She grows an abundant garden, yet the sky suddenly rains ashes in autumn. Wildfires have erupted all around the state, and the smog keeps seeping into her house, forcing her to evacuate.

Driving through the Mad Max-esque haze, her thoughts drift back to Lijiang, her ancestral hometown in China, where her maternal Nakhi tribe celebrates Fire as a divine natural force every summer. A journey of tracing dream-like currents of memories unfolds.

Launch Journal:

This project began in 2018. Five years, a historic wildfire season and a global pandemic later, the filmmaking is wrapped. Now the journey of sailing into the world to meet its the audiences begins.

It will have its first theatrical showing at the DOC NYC documentary film festival in New York City on November 11, 2023, as well as virtually on the festival’s platform until November 26.

In addition to documenting about the film’s adventures, I plan on using this space to curate a collection of written and visual mementos about Lijiang and Nakhi culture over time.

Thanks for visiting!

Shasha
